Batch picking

Also called: wave picking

Definition

Collecting the items for several orders in one pass through the warehouse, then sorting them into individual orders at a packing station.

It trades a sorting step for far less walking, which is the dominant cost in most small warehouses. The trade becomes worthwhile somewhere around fifty orders a day, earlier if your storage is spread out.

It also increases the value of scan verification at packing, because items for several orders are in motion together.
