Comparison

Inventory management software vs an OMS

Updated 2 min read

The short answer

Inventory management software tracks stock levels, movements and reorder points. An order management system does all of that and also owns the order lifecycle, GST invoicing, picking and packing, courier dispatch and marketplace settlement reconciliation. If your problem is only counting stock, inventory software is enough; if orders flow through you, it is not.

  • Inventory software owns: quantities, locations, reorder points, valuation
  • An OMS adds: order lifecycle, invoicing, fulfilment, shipping, settlements
  • Most Indian online sellers discover they needed the OMS scope after buying the narrower tool

The difference is scope, not quality

Good inventory management software is excellent at what it does. The question is only whether what it does covers your problem. Inventory tools were designed around warehousing and distribution — knowing what you hold, where, and when to buy more. Order management was designed around the transaction — a customer bought something and it now has to reach them, correctly invoiced and correctly paid for.

Choosing between them

Choose inventory software if
You sell mostly offline or wholesale, orders arrive as a handful of large purchase orders, and your hard problem is knowing what to buy and when.
Choose an OMS if
Orders arrive continuously from marketplaces or a storefront, each needs an invoice and a courier label, and money comes back as marketplace settlements rather than direct payments.
You may need both if
You run a genuine distribution business alongside online retail. Decide which system is authoritative for stock before you connect them.

Frequently asked questions

Is an OMS the same as inventory management software?

No. Inventory management software tracks stock quantities, locations and reorder points. An order management system includes that and adds the order lifecycle, GST invoicing, picking and packing, courier dispatch and marketplace settlement reconciliation.

Can I use inventory software for marketplace selling?

Partly. It will keep your quantities accurate, but you will still need separate answers for invoicing, courier labels, returns handling and reconciling what each marketplace paid you — which is where sellers usually end up buying a second tool.
